Wedding 101: Choosing Your Color Scheme; Session 3

Choosing The Perfect Color Scheme:

In my last post I gave you tips and tricks to picking your perfect theme and examples with pictures of them, but in this post I will show you how to choose the perfect colors and color schemes and make a list of colors that go well together and many different color schemes you could go with. So, lets get started.

Tips and Tricks To choosing Your Main Colors/ Color Scheme:

1) Look at Your Season's Colors~ Seasons each have their own colors and color schemes. You should use these to help you decide yours. I'm not saying you have to do the exact same colors, but choose colors that are compatible with your season's. Fall: reds and oranges, Winter: Blues and Whites, Spring: Pinks and Yellows, Summer: Greens and purples. So you may choose colors that are compatible with those.

2) Choose Whether you want lighter or Darker colors~ You should choose whether you want to go with a lighter approach or a darker approach with your colors. Because your colors are used consistently throughout your whole wedding, you definitely want to make sure they are the right style. Obviously you can do a light color here and a dark color there, but you should decide whether you want your main color to be light or dark or in the middle.

3) Have a Main Color~ You should have a color that it is the middle of your entire wedding color wheel -that I just created in my head :)- That color should be the color that every thing falls on and, yes, there will be many other colors around it, but there should be one or two in the center of your color wheel.

4) Mix and Match Colors~ You don't want too heavy of a feel for your wedding. If you go too dark on your colors, it will be almost overwhelming. If you go too light, it might feel like there's nothing there. So, you want to mix and match your colors so you get the perfect medium- this is your perfect day, right? So, because of your special wedding color wheel created by yours truly, you can choose colors outside your main color- which may be heavy or may be light. Remember, you can choose a color and use it in many different shades.

5) Use your Shades Correctly~ Like I said above, you can have many different shades of one of your main colors, but you can't have too many shades of one color or it will become confusing and look totally unorganized. So, you want to have your main color(s) which should stay the same with no shades that change (I will explain why in a sec) and your supporting colors which can have another shade that is very close to it. You don't want to have two totally different shades or it will look very confusing. Your main colors shouldn't change or have a different shade because you want them to be your MAIN. You can have two different shades of a color as your two main colors, but not two colors and each has another shade or it will look like you have four main colors which will turn into a total mess and your perfect day will have gone totally wrong. ;(

6) Be consistent with your colors~ You need to make sure your colors are not being used mostly or sometimes. They need to be used ALL THE TIME throughout your ENTIRE wedding. Others should be able to automatically tell what your theme colors are when they look at your wedding and fall automatically in love (almost like you did). Just make sure to stick to your colors. Yet another reason why you want to pick theme colors you love.

7) Look at Your Scenery~ Use your scenery as inspiration for choosing your colors. They should be compatible with your scenery anyway. This kind of goes along with looking at your season's colors. You want to make sure your scenery and colors align and match up and look like they were meant for each other.

Before looking at my list of wedding color schemes, to help you find your own, you should check out this link of your Wedding Color Wheel I actually found on Google. So, check that out. Also, check out this Color Naming Scale.
